Air Conditoners 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
Hi,
A friend just bought a Catalina 40 MK II - year 2000. Boat name is "Y-LEE".
Looking for advice on where and what size to install Marine Air Conditioners (and how many) - ?-

(I have installed one on my C34 Mk II - so I'm slightly familiar - and I know the hard part is picking the location.)

Thanks
Charlie

Charlie,

We have 2 units on our 400 MKII. They are Cruisair self contained. One is under the V berth on the starbard side. It cools the V berth, forward head and the main salon. The return duct is located under the V berth in the walkway and the cooling duct is run under the V berth, through the port hanging locker. There is a T with the large vent going into the main salon and a smaller going to the V berth. There is also a small vent to the forward head.

The aft unit is located in the top of the port hanging locker and cools just the aft room. Unfortinately I don't recall the size of the units but if you go to the Cruisair site it gives info re sizing.

One other factor to take into account is where you live. Down here on the Gulf Coast during the summer, we need all the cooling we can get as it gets pretty hot. If your in the northern climes you probably don't need as much.

Good luck.

Hey Charlie,

I have a 2000 Mark II, my layout seems to be the same as Scooters and I am also on the Gulf Coast. I believe the aft unit is 10K BTU. And he makes a very good point about being in the south, however, you may still want to install the aft unit for heat if you are in the north. It depends on your situation.

If you are in the north I suggest you install one unit (the forward one) and use it for a year. That may be sufficient. If not, you can always install the second unit later.

I also had a 1989 C34 before I got the C400. What a great boat!!! That A/C was located under the V-berth.

I also have two units in my 1998 C400 . The locations are very similar to Charlie. The forward unit is 16,000 BTU and aft cabin unit is 9000 BTUs. Both units have heat capabilities and they work great. They mounted the raw water pumps and strainers in the center bilge aft of the mast and under the berth in aft.
